Toile de Jouy — the finely engraved pastoral and floral scenes printed in a single colour on a clean ground, born in the 1760s at the Oberkampf workshops of Jouy-en-Josas, just south of Versailles. Vintage Voyagers France revives the tradition for the modern table.

Printed cotton was illegal in France for seventy-three years. When Louis XV lifted the ban in 1759, Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf opened a workshop at Jouy-en-Josas and, after switching to engraved copperplates in 1770, began printing pictures rather than patterns — shepherds with faces, architecture with perspective, garlands drawn fine enough to read up close. Jean-Baptiste Huet gave those scenes their rhythm, and the cloth gave its village its permanent place in the language of decoration.

Our toile keeps the two motifs that carried the tradition: the French Pastoral, with its figures and country vignettes, and the Bouquet, a tied posy of garden flowers. Each is engraved in the Jouy manner and printed one colour to a ground, in four colourways — classic blue on white, red on green, orange on blue, and purple on yellow. Every set gathers four scenes, so a table can be laid with variation rather than repetition.
