The Greek key — the meander, the fret — is among the oldest continuously used decorative forms in Western art. First systematized in Greek geometric pottery of the 9th century BCE, adopted by Rome, absorbed into the decorative vocabulary of the Renaissance, and carried forward by the Neoclassical revival that swept European design from the 1760s onward, the pattern has proven itself across more than two and a half millennia to be exactly right: a form that works at any scale, in any material, against any ground, for any occasion serious enough to warrant a considered table.

The Classic Greek Key plates present the meander border at the rim in its most resolved form — the continuous right-angle scroll running the full circumference of the plate, the rhythm of the pattern interrupted only at the point of completion where the sequence closes on itself.
