Les Échantillons Paper Plates

A page out of an eighteenth-century French sample book: squares of block-printed cotton pasted down in a grid and numbered in brown ink in a clerk's careful script — madder red and crimson against soot black, ochre, and the warm cream of paper that has sat in a drawer for two hundred years.

Stripes beside sprigs beside small scattered florals, the whole page a record of what the mills were selling that season. It reads as pattern from across the room and as a document up close. Three sizes: a 7-inch plate for cake and appetisers, a 9-inch for dinner, and a 7-inch bowl.
