The Candle Itself

A fragrance is only as honest as the wax that carries it. Ours is a coconut–apricot blend — a vegan composition of coconut, apricot, and soy waxes, made in the USA from renewable sources and fully biodegradable. We chose it for the way it behaves: a low, even melt that releases fragrance steadily rather than all at once, the way a room should fill — gradually, and then completely.

The fragrance oils are blended and tested in the United States to the strictest clean standard we could find: free of phthalates and parabens, and formulated without a single ingredient on California's Proposition 65 list. No dyes in the wax. Nothing in the vessel but what belongs there.

Each candle is hand-poured in small batches in the USA into frosted glass, finished with a natural wood lid. The wick is wood, not cotton — it burns with a soft crackle that does for a quiet evening what a fireplace does for a winter one. Trim it to 1/8" before each burn, give the first burn two to three hours to reach the edge of the glass, and the candle will return the favor for roughly sixty hours.

One note, because we work with natural waxes and no industrial stabilizers: you may occasionally see a soft, translucent veil where the wax meets the glass. It is the signature of a clean wax cooling at its own pace — a fingerprint, not a flaw. And when the last hour has burned, keep the vessel. Warm water and soap will clear it, and it deserves a second life on your desk or shelf.

The lagoon at Bora Bora has no equivalent on earth: a cathedral of water in fifteen shades of turquoise and jade, encircled by coral gardens and presided over by the volcanic silhouette of Mount Otemanu, which rises from the island's centre with the unhurried authority of something that has been standing in exactly this light for two million years.

BORA BORA opens with the ozone clarity of Pacific air above breaking surf, orange brightening the freshness into something warm and alive. Sea salt, freesia, and green leaves bloom in the heart with the lush, saturated beauty of a French Polynesian afternoon, the particular tropical elegance of a place where the flowers are not decorative but necessary.

Tonka bean, soft musk, and warm amber settle the composition into a finish as smooth and warm as lagoon water at low tide, sun-warmed and impossibly serene. This is paradise, spoken in French.

A Note from Jeff

I have never collected anything in French Polynesia. There are no antique markets in Bora Bora, no brocantes, and no provincial auction houses—the island has no use for the past in that particular way. What it has instead is an absolute and consuming present, a quality of light and water so overwhelming that the antiquarian impulse simply stops. You do not look for things. You look at where you are.

I first saw the lagoon from a small plane descending through cloud, and the color of that water—that specific, impossible turquoise held inside the coral rim—is something I have spent years trying to locate in other contexts: in glazed faïence, in Sèvres bleu céleste, in the teal of a Louis XV lacquered panel. I have never quite found it. This fragrance does not find it either—nothing could—but it finds something true about the air that sits above it, and that is enough.
