Description

Saint-Malo was built by people who understood that the distance between France and the edge of the known world was, in the right ship with the right wind, not very far at all. The corsairs of this walled Breton port spent centuries bringing the spice routes home to quaysides that smelled more of Pondicherry than Brittany.

This was a city of stone and sea spray that traded in the ephemeral: cardamom from the Malabar Coast, cinnamon from Ceylon, and clove from the Banda Islands. To enter Saint-Malo was to encounter a sensory argument for exploration. This fragrance captures that collision of granite-solid domesticity and the far-reaching aromatic reach of the merchant ships.

The Cargo of Corsairs

SAINT-MALO opens with a vivid burst of orange peel cut with cardamom and cinnamon, reminiscent of a spice market the morning a new vessel arrives. The heart provides a perfectly balanced, indulgent warmth: peppercorn, nutmeg, and cream creating a texture that feels substantial and protective.

Black tea, vanilla, and clove settle into the base with the unhurried satisfaction of a long voyage that has ended well: deep, aromatic, and irreversibly warm.

The Wax and the Vessel

The vessel is a heavy, frosted glass with a soft matte finish, echoing the sea-mist that often hangs over the Breton ramparts. A natural wooden wick provides the gentle crackle of a fireside, grounding the spice notes in a familiar, tactile environment.

The wax is a vegan blend of natural coconut and apricot, selected for its clean-burning properties and renewable source. It provides an even diffusion of scent that remains clear and long-lasting throughout the burn. The wax is toxin-free, paraben-free, and phthalate-free.

SPECIFICATIONS & CARE

Specifications

Vessel: Frosted Glass with Natural Wood Lid

Wax Color: Natural, No Dyes
Wick: Natural Wooden Wick, Trim to 1/8" before each burn
Size: 11 oz. · 2.93" W x 3.75" H
Burn Time: Approximately 60 Hours
Origin: Made in the USA

The First Burn

Allow the wax to melt fully to the edge of the vessel on the first burn, generally two to three hours. This prevents tunneling and engages the full wax pool for every subsequent burn. A candle given this small courtesy at the outset will honor the full sixty hours of its intended life.

Safe Burning

Never leave a burning candle unattended. Never burn on or near anything that might catch fire. Keep out of the reach of children and pets. For comprehensive guidance, the National Candle Association maintains an excellent resource at candles.org (https://candles.org/fire-safety-candles/).

The Vessel After

The frosted glass vessel is worth keeping when the candle has run its course. Warm water and dish soap remove any remaining wax cleanly, and what remains is a small, beautifully finished object that deserves a second life: as a vase, a vessel for pencils, or simply a reminder that good things are worth the space they occupy.

The base is the voyage ended well: black tea, vanilla, and clove settling into a deep, aromatic warmth that holds for the length of the burn.

A Note from Jeff

I have always loved the contrast of Saint-Malo: the severity of the gray stone walls against the exotic warmth of the spices that passed through them. There is a specific feeling of safety when you step inside the gates as a storm builds over the English Channel. I burn this when I want that sense of shelter combined with a hint of the far-off. It is best enjoyed when the wind is up.
