The Candle Itself

A fragrance is only as honest as the wax that carries it. Ours is a coconut–apricot blend — a vegan composition of coconut, apricot, and soy waxes, made in the USA from renewable sources and fully biodegradable. We chose it for the way it behaves: a low, even melt that releases fragrance steadily rather than all at once, the way a room should fill — gradually, and then completely.

The fragrance oils are blended and tested in the United States to the strictest clean standard we could find: free of phthalates and parabens, and formulated without a single ingredient on California's Proposition 65 list. No dyes in the wax. Nothing in the vessel but what belongs there.

Each candle is hand-poured in small batches in the USA into frosted glass, finished with a natural wood lid. The wick is wood, not cotton — it burns with a soft crackle that does for a quiet evening what a fireplace does for a winter one. Trim it to 1/8" before each burn, give the first burn two to three hours to reach the edge of the glass, and the candle will return the favor for roughly sixty hours.

One note, because we work with natural waxes and no industrial stabilizers: you may occasionally see a soft, translucent veil where the wax meets the glass. It is the signature of a clean wax cooling at its own pace — a fingerprint, not a flaw. And when the last hour has burned, keep the vessel. Warm water and soap will clear it, and it deserves a second life on your desk or shelf.

Saint-Malo was built by people who understood that the distance between France and the edge of the known world was, in the right ship with the right wind, not very far at all. The corsairs and merchants of this walled Breton port spent centuries bringing the spice routes home, unloading their aromatic cargo onto quaysides that smelled more of Pondicherry than Brittany on a good tide.

SAINT-MALO opens with a burst of orange peel cut with cardamom and cinnamon: vivid, festive, the smell of a spice market the morning after a ship has arrived. The heart is the warming itself: peppercorn, nutmeg, and cream building a perfectly balanced, indulgent warmth that feels like the best possible version of being cold outside.

Black tea, vanilla, and clove settle into the base with the unhurried satisfaction of a long voyage that has ended well: deep, aromatic, and deliciously, irreversibly warm.

Fragrance Pyramid

Top Notes
Orange Peel, Cardamom, Cinnamon

Heart Notes
Peppercorn, Nutmeg, Cream

Base Notes
Black Tea, Vanilla, Clove

The opening is the spice market the morning a new ship is unloaded: orange peel bright against cardamom and cinnamon, fresh and unmistakably mercantile. The heart is the indulgent warmth below deck, peppercorn and nutmeg given texture by a soft note of cream, substantial and protective. The base is the voyage ended well: black tea, vanilla, and clove settling into a deep, aromatic warmth that holds for the length of the burn.

A Note from Jeff

I have always loved the contrast of Saint-Malo: the severity of the gray stone walls against the exotic warmth of the spices that passed through them. There is a specific feeling of safety when you step inside the gates as a storm builds over the English Channel. I burn this when I want that sense of shelter combined with a hint of the far-off. It is best enjoyed when the wind is up.
