Milos Paper Party Plate

The potters of Athens worked in two colours and needed no more: the red of the clay and the black of the slip, drawn on and fired so that one became the ground and the other the ornament. Milos brings that discipline to the table — a fawn field ringed in black, every element of the border carried by line alone.

The border is built the way a cornice is built, in registers. A double meander — the Greek key, an unbroken line that runs the whole circumference — encloses the centre. Outside it sits a band of acanthus with rosettes at the quarters, then egg-and-dart, then a fine bead at the rim. The centre is left open, so the plate frames what is on it rather than competing.

Available as a 9″ dinner plate, a 7″ salad or dessert plate, and a 7″ bowl. Sits with the rest of Grèce, and reads well against a plain linen or a dark table.
