Noël — Le Turban (Set of 8)

A man in a red turban, painted against a dark ground, returning the viewer's look with the level gaze of the early Netherlandish portrait. The cloth is wound high and falls in folds the painter plainly enjoyed getting right.

Portraits like this one hung in rooms where people ate, and there is something companionable about bringing one back to the table. The red does the seasonal work — deep, worn, nothing like a ribbon — so the plate reads as Christmas at a glance and as a picture on second look.

Available in 9″ dinner and 7″ salad or dessert sizes, with a coordinating bowl. Eight plates.
