The Design

The illustration comes from the golden age of natural-history publishing, when serpents were drawn with the same care given to portraits. This one is all rhythm: a scarlet body ringed in cream and black, looped into an S that fills the well of the plate. Set against an aged ivory ground with a fine dark rim, it reads as a specimen mounted for study.

I found these snakes in a stack of 19th-century natural-history plates and could not resist putting them on a table. They are my favorite kind of Halloween: strange, a little beautiful, and not a cartoon in sight.
