Velours de Lyon Paper Plates

A Lyon silk velvet carried onto the plate — baskets of crimson and burgundy flowers mirrored across a cream ground, olive foliage, ochre blossoms and a scatter of pale blue, with the crush and the sheen of the cut pile still in it.

The pattern is a velours ciselé, the cut-and-voided velvet the Lyon looms were famous for, where the design is carved out of the pile so the ground shows through behind it. It covers the whole face, so a stack reads as one length of cloth. Three sizes: a 7-inch plate for cake and appetisers, a 9-inch for dinner, and a 7-inch bowl.
