The Candle Itself

A fragrance is only as honest as the wax that carries it. Ours is a coconut–apricot blend — a vegan composition of coconut, apricot, and soy waxes, made in the USA from renewable sources and fully biodegradable. We chose it for the way it behaves: a low, even melt that releases fragrance steadily rather than all at once, the way a room should fill — gradually, and then completely.

The fragrance oils are blended and tested in the United States to the strictest clean standard we could find: free of phthalates and parabens, and formulated without a single ingredient on California's Proposition 65 list. No dyes in the wax. Nothing in the vessel but what belongs there.

Each candle is hand-poured in small batches in the USA into frosted glass, finished with a natural wood lid. The wick is wood, not cotton — it burns with a soft crackle that does for a quiet evening what a fireplace does for a winter one. Trim it to 1/8" before each burn, give the first burn two to three hours to reach the edge of the glass, and the candle will return the favor for roughly sixty hours.

One note, because we work with natural waxes and no industrial stabilizers: you may occasionally see a soft, translucent veil where the wax meets the glass. It is the signature of a clean wax cooling at its own pace — a fingerprint, not a flaw. And when the last hour has burned, keep the vessel. Warm water and soap will clear it, and it deserves a second life on your desk or shelf.

Description

The garrigue-scented foothills south of Toulouse — where the Pyrénées begin their long conversation with the sky and the air dries to something crystalline and ancient — have an atmosphere that the French call sauvage: wild in the deepest sense, the wildness of landscapes that predate human intention and will outlast it. The sage grows here the way it grows wherever it belongs: unselfconsciously, abundantly, releasing its clean silver-green fragrance with every brush of wind or boot or hand.TOULOUSE opens with the dry, herbal brightness of sage under a Languedoc sun — earthy, clean, with a clarity that cuts through the warm air like cool water. The heart deepens into the landscape itself: desert florals opening slowly in the midday heat, sacred and sun-bleached, the particular beauty of things that have learned to thrive without excess.

Palo santo and sandalwood arrive in the base with the slow, ceremonial warmth of something ancient being honoured — resinous, grounding, carrying the deep aromatic memory of sun-baked earth and the particular peace of open, unhurried spaces. This is the fragrance of a landscape that has never needed to explain itself.

A Note from Jeff

I came to Toulouse late — later than I should have, given how much time I had spent in the south of France by then. I had always moved through it on the way to somewhere else: Lyon to Montpellier, Paris to Barcelona, the TGV window offering a glimpse of pink rooftops and the wide bend of the Garonne and then nothing. When I finally stayed, it was for a brocante outside the city that turned out to be modest and worth every minute, and I spent the rest of that weekend doing what I always do in a city I am finally paying proper attention to: walking without a destination, buying coffee in the wrong cafés, getting corrected by locals, and slowly understanding what the place actually is.

What it actually is, I decided, is a city that exists in comfortable relationship with the country around it — the flat agricultural plain to the north, the garrigue foothills to the south, the Pyrénées visible on clear days from the higher ground. TOULOUSE the fragrance is less about the city than about that country: the sage and the dry air and the sense, standing on a hillside above the plain, that you are in the presence of something that long predates the TGV and will long outlast it.
