Le Nôtre Classic T-Shirt — André Le Nôtre Tee
Description
Jardinier du Roi · Versailles · Classic Cut
André Le Nôtre shaped the landscape of France more completely than any architect, painter, or engineer of the seventeenth century. Working from the premise that a garden was not merely nature improved but nature argued with—organized into geometries that expressed what a monarch’s authority ought to look like from above—he produced at Vaux-le-Vicomte and then at Versailles the definitive statement of French formal design. His name belongs to the history of French civilization in the same way that Racine’s and Colbert’s do: as a maker of the form in which that civilization expressed its best understanding of itself. This shirt carries his name as a tribute.
The graphic tee occupies an interesting position in contemporary dress—it is at once the most casual of garments and, when the right image appears on it, a form of declaration. What goes on the chest matters. Le Nôtre is a figure worth declaring: a garden designer of genius whose influence on how we organize outdoor space persists, quietly and pervasively, in every formal garden, every city park, every boulevard planted with trees at regular intervals since the seventeenth century.
Wear it in the gardens at Versailles, if you can manage to be there, and see if the guards notice. Wear it anywhere else and accept that you know something most people passing by do not.
