Description

Mint, wine, and midnight are the colours of France at the transition between seasons — of the Loire valley in early autumn, when the vines are going dark red and the river runs silver under a sky that has shifted overnight into something colder and more serious. They are also the colours of the best French interiors at evening: the pale celadon of old wallpaper in a hall lit by a single lamp, the deep burgundy of a velvet banquette in a restaurant on the rue de Buci, the near-black of the Seine at ten o’clock. This journal holds all three in conversation.

The genius of the tricolor in design lies in the relationships, not the individual colours. Mint alone is fresh but slight. Wine alone can feel heavy. Midnight alone becomes austere. Together, in the proportions this design has found for them, they produce something genuinely composed — a combination that feels as if it could not have been otherwise.

This is a journal for evenings as much as mornings — for writing by lamplight in a rented room somewhere in France, or in memory of one, in any room in any city.

Using the Journal
The sewn binding opens flat without resistance, making it comfortable for sustained writing sessions. The lined pages take most pen types well; felt-tip and rollerball give the clearest line on the paper weight used here.

Care Instructions
Use a soft, clean, dry cloth to gently brush any dust or dirt from the cover. Avoid moisture and prolonged direct sunlight, which will dull the matte finish over time. Store upright or flat on a clean surface.

A Note from Jeff

I have a particular fondness for autumn in France — for the weeks after the summer visitors have left and before the cold sets in properly, when the light is lower and more golden and the towns feel returned to themselves. In the Dordogne and in Burgundy especially, there is a quality to the October air and the October palette that seems to invite writing — something about the season’s seriousness that makes the journal feel more necessary than it does in July.

This colour combination was made for that mood. The mint keeps it from being mournful, the wine gives it weight, and the midnight provides something to write against. I find it very easy to open.
