Description

Garment-Dyed · Tour Eiffel · Champ de Mars

The Eiffel Tower has had, since 1889, a more complicated relationship with opinion than almost any other structure in the world. Maupassant famously ate lunch inside it to avoid having to look at it. The architectural establishment of Paris declared it a catastrophe. And yet something about it—the scale, the audacity, the unexpected grace of the iron latticework against a Paris sky—has outlasted every objection and become, in the century and a third since the Exposition Universelle, the image that more people associate with beauty and with France than any other. The Tower won. This shirt acknowledges that victory, in a particular green that speaks to something more permanent than the tourist moment: the green of Gustave Eiffel’s iron, now a familiar presence on the horizon of Paris.

The garment-dyed finish gives this shirt the lived-in quality that the Tower itself has acquired—not the freshly painted optimism of 1889, but the settled authority of something that has been standing in one place for a very long time and has no intention of going anywhere. The green deepens with washing. The silhouette is clean. It wears well in Paris and everywhere else.

A Note from Jeff

My preferred view of the Eiffel Tower is from the Trocadéro, in the early morning before the vendors have set up, when the space is nearly empty and the Tower is simply there—enormous, precise, implausible, and entirely sure of itself. At that hour and in that light, all the accumulated irony about the Tower disappears, and you are left with what it actually is: an extraordinary piece of engineering that happens also to be beautiful. Maupassant was wrong. This shirt is for the people who know he was wrong.

The green is correct. The garment carries the Tower with the confidence the Tower deserves. Wear it with some pleasure in the fact that a structure designed as a temporary exhibit ended up becoming the most recognized landmark in the world.
