In the years that followed 1789, France remade itself not only in law and governance but in color. The tricolor — rouge, blanc, bleu — moved from cockade to carriage, from banner to painted ceiling, from the streets of Paris to the decorative arts of an entire era. Furniture was painted in its bands. Architectural interiors received it in bold diagonals. Medallions and rosettes were rendered in its scheme on the doors of government buildings, the panels of ceremonial coaches, and the gilded woodwork of newly requisitioned hôtels particuliers.

This design draws directly from that vocabulary: bold diagonal chevron bands in the Revolutionary palette, anchored at each intersection by a sunburst rosette in concentric rings of red, white, and deep slate blue. Between them, gilded staffs and sculpted floral knots occupy the geometric negative space, their forms borrowed from the decorative language of official France at the height of the First Republic. The overall composition is dense and confident, the kind of surface that reads as complex from a distance and rewards closer attention.

At 30″ × 180″ the paper makes a natural dining table runner, the repeating medallion pattern centering along the full length of a long table. At 30″ × 72″ it suits a smaller table or sideboard.
