Description

The marbled paper tradition has been producing unrepeatable surfaces since the 17th century: pigment floated on size, drawn into patterns by comb and stylus, each pull different from the last in ways that no mechanical process has ever fully replicated. The Les Fleurs Aqua Marbled paper carries that tradition into wrapping — swirls of turquoise, coral, gold, and cream rippling across the sheet in the fluid, organic patterns of the finest French decorated papers.

The design belongs to the aesthetic of the marbled endpapers that the finest 19th-century bookbinders used to signal that what lay within was worth protecting: the chromatic richness of the pattern functioning as a declaration of intent. On a wrapped gift, the effect is similar. This is not paper that apologizes for being there. It announces the gift before the ribbon is untied.

Printed on 90 gsm fine art paper, smooth matte or high-gloss finish. Three sizes: 30″×36″, 30″×72″, and 30″×180″. Part of the Les Fleurs collection.

A Few Notes on Use

Score fold lines lightly against a straight edge before creasing. The marbled pattern requires no alignment before cutting: any section works equally well. The reverse is plain white and takes handwriting well.

A Note from Jeff

The marbled paper tradition is one of the great French contributions to the art of the decorated book, and the reason it persisted for so long is that it never stopped being beautiful. The patterns are unrepeatable, the colors change with the angle of light, and the whole thing has the quality of something that was made rather than manufactured.

This paper carries that character into wrapping. For a gift that deserves to arrive with some ceremony, I think it is the right choice.
