Description

The tubes of Lefranc & Cie were the working materials of French painting for the better part of two centuries. Their silver-grey metal bodies, their color-coded label bands, and the restrained commercial typography identifying each pigment — Vert Émeraude, Jaune de Chrome, Sienne, Bleu de Prusse, Vermillon Orange, Blanc d’Argent — are among the most recognizable objects in the history of the French atelier. On this wrapping paper, reproduced from vintage Lefranc & Cie catalogue illustrations, they repeat across the full sheet in a horizontal sequence on a warm cream ground: the contents of a painter’s drawer, unrolled and made into packaging.

It is wrapping paper that knows what it is doing. The illustrations are drawn from period catalogue material: the precise, unornamented commercial illustration used to present the range to professional painters and decorators. Six tubes appear in the repeat, each rendered in careful tonal gradation with its original label, color band, and pigment name intact. Between them, the cream ground carries fragments of the original catalogue typography in the restrained lettering of the period.

Printed on 90 gsm fine art paper in three sizes and two finishes. Pairs naturally with the Lefranc paint tube ribbon. Also works as a drawer liner, studio surface, or flat-lay background. The reverse is plain white and takes handwriting well.

A Few Notes on Use

Score fold lines lightly against a straight edge before creasing for clean, sharp corners. The 90 gsm weight folds cleanly around most gift forms without tearing. The reverse is plain white and takes handwriting well, making it suitable for a personal note written directly inside the wrapping.

A Note from Jeff

I spent several years finding Lefranc & Cie tubes in brocantes and flea markets before I started looking at them seriously as designed objects. The typography is restrained in the way that the best French commercial design always was: the name of the pigment in a typeface that does not call attention to itself, the color band doing all the identifying work, the tube itself as the object. The whole thing is extremely well considered for something that was designed to be squeezed and discarded.

This paper is for wrapping something given to a painter, or to someone who wishes they were one. Either way the recipient will know exactly what they’re looking at.
