Description

The solid-color plates in the Vintage Voyagers France collection exist for one purpose: to give the patterned designs in Les Fleurs, Toile, and La Révolution a foil that holds them in balance. A plate entirely given over to pattern is a complete statement; a plate in a clear, saturated field of color alongside it is the pause that makes the statement legible. The color is the design.

The colors in this series were selected with the rest of the tableware range in view. Each hue either echoes a tone present in one of the patterned collections or provides a contrast that reads as deliberate rather than accidental. A two-tone rim and field format keeps the plates from reading as purely flat — the broad color band at the rim gives a finished look in the hand, while the lighter center provides visual rest against both pale and dark linens.

Available in 9″ dinner size in a curated range of primary and secondary colors. Mix with the 7″ patterned plates from Les Fleurs or La Révolution for a table that uses pattern the way the French always have: with intention and without apology.
A Note from Jeff

The instinct that produced this series is the same one that makes a well-set French table look inevitable rather than assembled: restraint in one place so that something else can be generous. The French have always understood that a single flat color, precisely chosen, is not a placeholder. It is a decision as considered as any pattern.
